Well, it's not the happiest of subjects for sure, but an informal survey of our friends has informed me that all the 3 1/2 half year olds we know are starting to think about death.
It's sad, a little funny, and fascinating to see her pondering one of the questions that makes humans unique in the world.
For example: Anya asked the other day about what happens when someone's mother dies. "If she doesn't have a mommy who will look out for her?" Which breaks ones heart to hear. I still well up when I think of it.
Other interesting thoughts about death:
I will often hear her playing with her toys and saying things like, "The mermaid is going to die, ahhhh here comes the big rock from space!"
She wonders if, when you die, they throw you away in the garbage.
She thinks when people die they "trip walk", or can't stand up any more, and ponders any number of other impacts death has on the function of ones legs.
Of course she wonders what happens to you when you die and, lacking any certainty on the subject ourselves Amy and I are at a loss to come up with an appropriate answer that doesn't start with, "Well some people believe..."
Anya only knows of a couple of things that have "died". Dinosaurs, who she knows died when a giant asteroid fell from space and landed on them. Various toys which have "died" by either breaking or having their batteries loose charge. And sadly of our dear friend's father and Grandmother (which is really what precipitated this whole interest of hers.)
