Parent-Teacher Conference

I just had our very last preschool parent-teacher conference. Bittersweet. We just have two more months of class left before graduation.

The takeaway was that Anya is chomping at the bit for Kindergarten. Her teachers say that she is very interested in learning and has great focus - she wants to absorb everything and asks lots of questions. I'm thrilled to hear this, since when I see her in sports-type classes, she doesn't listen to the instructors very well and does her own thing.

Another thing I asked about and am happy to hear is that she is patient with the younger children in the mixed-age class. On playdates, we've had some issues with her being rather mean to the younger siblings, so I was concerned she might act that way with other young kids. Her teachers say that Anya doesn't really pay much attention to them, but when they ask for a big kid volunteer to assist a younger kid or hold their hand, she usually offers. Since I mentioned the playdate issues, though, the teachers will give Anya more opportunity to work on relationships with younger kids. Have I mentioned I love her teachers?

Anya at the Microsoft Campus Jam

Microsoft had a day of activities yesterday and the family went. It was a great time.  We ran a 5k in about 50 minutes.  There was an awful lot of running and jogging, a fair deal of walking, a bit of sitting, and a touch of crying.  But there was notably NO carrying of the child.  We were impressed.

Here is Anya and Amy before the race.

Two photogenic Sounders players. We have their autographs, but I have no idea who they were.

There was also a kids area with several jumpy houses. All of these videos were shot AFTER running a 5k and jumping in the jumpy house.

Taking the girls fishing

Todd and I decided to skip out on work and take Eva and Anya fishing last Wednesday.
We bought Anya a little fishing pole at Fred Meyers and headed out to Tolt McDonald Park near Fall City. We didn't get so much as a nibble, but that was hardly the point.  The girls had a great time.  They mostly fished for about 5 hours. But they also go to run around in the little streams, play in the rocks and sand, and even found a big garter snake which was surprisingly unbothered by their petting it.

Our little sewist

Anya bought her first sewing machine on Saturday. It was a Singer Chainstitch machine - really more of a toy than a serious piece of equipment. But she has really been wanting to sew her own items and this looked like a great age-appropriate, beginner machine, since it had a needle guard. She spied it out in the store and spent her own money on it.

Sadly, the thing was a total piece of junk and she only got about ten minutes of actual practice time on it. Just when she was really getting comfortable with using the machine and had started a project. Poor thing was so disappointed. And Chris and I were pretty angry that Singer would put their name on such a junky product.
So we decided to use this as a teaching opportunity, about the power she has as a consumer. We went back to Homegoods and Anya returned it. She took the sewing machine, walked up to the customer service counter, and clearly and politely said, "I bought this sewing machine yesterday and it doesn't work. I'd like my money back, please." And she got her money back, plus two stickers. I'm very proud of her for having the courage to handle it, since she was pretty nervous.

I also plan to, with Anya, write a letter to Singer (another learning opportunity). I'm just that disgusted with them about this. It wasn't a one-off, defective machine. I checked the reviews on Amazon afterward and they are one star, across the board. They have caused many an upset child.

So yesterday, we stopped by Quality Sewing to see if a non-junky, age-appropriate machine exists. There isn't really one. There's the Babylock Anna, which was a good price and is a basic, beginner model. But there is no needle guard and I'd have to always be right next to her while she sews. So I think she's not quite ready yet. We might still cave and get it, or, more likely, wait for Santa.

I'm thrilled she's so interested in sewing, though. I'm looking forward to teaching her and it's a good skill to have.

Easter

We had a great Easter weekend. The weather was perfect - 70's and sunny, instead of the usual 40-50's and raining. We met up with some PEPS friends to do the Laurelhurst egg hunt again and the kids had a good time. Anya got a decent haul and - bonus - only about half of the plastic eggs were filled with chocolate. The rest had non-chocolate candy that she liked. Afterwards, Anya and I went to a baby shower to celebrate the impending arrival of a new Scheuer (Christy and Rogan).

The next day, the Easter Bunny left a basket of goodies (stuffed rabbit, lots of hair accessories, paper dolls, a bunny popper/gun-type toy, and a bit of candy). Kid seemed pleased with her treats. Then we went to Lynn & Steve's for a delicious Easter dinner, another egg hunt in the back yard, and a bit of family bike riding. Happy Easter!
